A male cabin crew member of Arik Air was arrested yesterday at Heathrow airport in London while trying to smuggle 2.76 kilos of pure cocaine inside the country.
According to the Arik Air’s spokesman, Ola Adebanji, the airline is currently carrying out its own private investigation to find out how the crew member managed to carry the substance on board at the departure point.
Adebanji also told that Arik Air representatives are fully cooperative on that issue with the UK law enforcement authorities in their investigation.
“The airline again reaffirms its commitment to the fight against drug and illicit substances’ trafficking and will not tolerate the use of any of its aircraft or crew for the courier of banned items and substances,” told Adebanji in his statement.
Adebanji assured that “Arik Air carries out very stringent checks on all members of staff and its travelling guests ahead of all flights.”
“The airline will continue to focus its attention on measures to prevent the possibility of any future similar incidents,” concluded Adebanji, adding that “Arik Air is a responsible Nigerian company always seeking to maintain and uphold the integrity and proud reputation of the nation.”
Mr. Osita Chidoka, the Aviation Minister, on Monday February 16 said the ministry has arrested three staff of Arik Air for stealing fuel from a plane.
Seven months ago a Nigerian passenger, who was traveling on Business Class from Abuja to Enugu aboard Arik Air was caught stealing mid air.
