Bayelsa Worker Commits Suicide Over Unpaid Salaries

A 43-year-old engineer from Bayelsa state working for the Bayelsa State Water Board drank a highly toxic insecticide known as “Sniper” after been owed more than a year salary.

Peter Ogiero took his own life early on Friday morning because he hasn’t been paid for thirteen months. Unable to fight depression, he decided to commit suicide.

Two months ago the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) called an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council of the congress to address the crisis of unpaid salaries. The congress president, Ayuba Wabba, told the press, “we are not going to take it lightly with them [the governors of debtor-states]…We might take a national action on it, we will take the next line of action in the meeting.

Earlier a former governor of Bayelsa state, Timipre Sylva criticised his successor, Seriake Dickson, asking him to resign for showing that he lacked the capacity to do the job for which he was imposed on the people of the state.
