The Akwa Ibom state governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, seems helpless as his predecessor and newly elected senator, Godswill Akpabio, has practically taken over the governor’s cabinet through the back door.
The governor’s newly appointed commissioners, are mostly members of the immediate past government loyal to Akpabio, Daily Independent reports.
Over 11 of the former commissioner’s names were submitted to the state House of Assembly for confirmation. The selected loyalists might be a ploy by Akpabio to keep his successor in check.
According to the list presented in the floor of the House yesterday, the former commissioners include Etido Inyang, Aniekan Umanah, Emmanuel Enoidem, Godwin Ntukudeh, Gloria Edet, Akan Okon, Monday Uko, Emmanuel Ibiok, Uwemedimo Nwoko, Enobong Uwah, and others.
Others including new entrants are; Ephraim Inyang, Ekong Sampson, Elizabeth Obot, Martins Ephraim, Enyinaya Ekpenyong and Anietie Etuk.
This development is already causing concern among residents of the state because of what many see as the overbearing attitude of the former governor.
Although many acknowledge the immense achievements of Akpabio, expectations are very high as regards the performance of Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Meanwhile, Governor Emmanuel is on the verge of selling off the state-owned private jet which was bought by Akpabio as the cost of maintenance is said to be a drain on the state’s purse.
