A team of policemen reportedly invaded the house of Aniekan Bassey, a member representing Uruan Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Sunday, September 20.
According to Punch report, the policemen who came in two patrol vans claimed to be searching for an undisclosed exhibit.
Aniekan escaped being killed as his cousin, Akan Bassey who was mistaken for him got shot.
An eyewitness, Iquo Edet said Akan had rushed out of the bathroom to check what was happening and was shot as soon as he disclosed his name to them.
Reacting to the incident, Aniekan described it as shocking and barbaric.
He explained that he rushed to the crime scene immediately it happened and helped convey his wounded cousin to the hospital.
The lawmaker was happy that Akan luckily survived as the bullet did not go through his heart.
He added that he would not rest until the policemen responsible for the act, were brought to justice.
Confirming the incident, Cordelia Nwawe, the police public relations officer of the Akwa Ibom state command said it was an accidental discharge, adding that the policeman did not aim the gun at anybody.
“Investigation is ongoing at the moment. The injured victim is undergoing treatment; he is responding to treatment. Hopefully, he will be home tomorrow,” she said.
Nwawe added that the Commissioner of Police, Murtala Mani had ordered a diligent investigation into the matter.
The invasion of the Akwa Ibom state government house in Uyo by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on September 3, is yet to die down.
The Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly had described the raid as an “act of felony, persecution and political vendetta,” threatening to drag the DSS to court.
Following the reactions that trailed the DSS raid, the state chapter of the APC asked the PDP-led state government to wait for the report of the DSS.
